Hello
It has been a long time coming, but we finally have a recorded version of This Perfect Day. The song has evolved quite a lot since we started laying down tracks. We just kept thinking of new ideas! Our favourite is the, relatively late in the process, addition of ‘The Mamas and The Papas’ inspired background vocals. We love the music of the 60's and 70's and elements often creeps into our original work.

Sue and Dwight - September 2022 News!

Hello

September just sneaked up on us, and even though Summer isn't officially over for another few weeks, the season change feels imminent. That feeling isn't necessarily weather-related, it's more a result of the days getting shorter, the return of kids to school, and the annual exhibition here in Toronto. One thing that isn't changing though, is our on-line show schedule. Here's what we have lined up...

Spring Is In The Air

Hello

Here in Toronto today, the sun is shining brilliantly and the temperature is slowly rising, giving us hope that Spring will soon arrive. We don't usually mind Winter, but for some reason, it seems this past one has overstayed it's welcome. We have a busy April planned and a big event to celebrate!

April 27th marks our 100th Livingroom Live show! When we first ventured into this new online frontier in May of 2020, we thought it would be a good way to stay connected with our audience 'for a few months' until we could get back out performing in clubs. Little did we know that it would be such a wonderful experience for us, that we plan to continue as long as all our friends keep tuning in.

After each show, we read through the comments in the Chat areas on Facebook and YouTube. We love to know how you're doing, which songs you enjoy, and what the music means to you. And we love seeing the friendships that have developed between viewers watching from their homes in different provinces, states, and countries. It really is heartwarming. This may sound unbelievable, but thanks to these interactions, the wonderful emails, cards and letters we receive, we genuinely feel like we've all been physically together in the same room for these shows. Thank you for that.

Here's what's lined up over the next 4 weeks.
(Direct links to Facebook and YouTube on show days are in the 'Shows' tab on our website: Shows)

Darn Pandemic!

We've heard from a lot of people asking if we could do some livestream shows during this pandemic. We want to, but unfortunately we discovered we don't have enough upload speed with our current Internet package. We have ordered an upgrade but aren't scheduled for installation for a few more weeks yet. As soon as we have it and are ready to go live, you'll hear from us if you're on our mailing list.

In the meantime, stay home if you can and stay safe wherever you are! XO

Winterfolk XVIII

Posted by Sue

The 2020 Winterfolk Festival was a real busy one for us! We performed four times during the weekend, a different themed show each time.
This year the festival moved from Danforth Ave. to Bloor and Brunswick and performances took place in the various rooms of The Tranzac Club and The Annex Hotel.

First up for us was a workshop we hosted, called 'Legendary Women of Folk'. We shared the stage with Lynn Harrison, Bonnie Gladstone, and Melanie Peterson, alternately presenting songs of powerful women artists of the folk genre. We thoroughly enjoyed the versions of the songs presented as did the audience that packed the Annex Commons, based on their enthusiasm throughout the two hour show! (Photos: P. Kohly)
Our second show, where we presented our Sue and Dwight original music, on Saturday evening was so much fun. We had such a fabulous attentive audience and The Annex Hotel Wine Bar is a lovely intimate venue. (Photo: A. Bentley)

And, what a blast it was, ending off the weekend with double-header performances with our folk show bandmates Henry Lees and Tony Laviola.
First up was 'Where Have All The Folk Songs Gone? 60's Folk Revival' in the Tranzac Main Hall. Songsheets were handed out and the audience enthusiastically sang along to every word. Guitarist extraordinaire, Tony Quarrington joined us onstage to sweeten up our sound with his amazing licks.
(Photo: D. Shillman)
(Photo: D. Many of the singalongers from the first show had stuck around and continued joining in. The grandfather of a little boy named Julius asked us to dedicate Puff The Magic Dragon to him. At the end of the show the little fellow wanted to come up to say hello to us, but then got shy and left the stage area. Another audience member pointed him out to me and I went over to chat with him. He was so sweet. I love that a song from nearly 60 years ago continues to resonate with new generations.

We were also delighted to be invited to join Gathering Sparks (Eve Goldman and Jane Lewis) during their singalong show on Saturday afternoon. It was fun sharing the stage with them, Ken Whitely, and James Gordon. Hopefully we come across a photo of it!

Many thanks to Brian Gladstone and his team for organizing this festival, and to all the volunteers and artists who make it such a success.

Before I sign off, I have to tell you this story about something amazing...mystical? magical?...that happened during the weekend. After our set on Satuday, we decided to stay and watch some of the other performers. In the Annex Commons, on the break, I spotted a table opening up so went over to see if I could nab a seat. One in the group of ladies who were leaving said "Are you Sue Peters?" I said I was and she said "We were at your show last Wednesday at the Free Times Cafe!" What a coincidence! We chatted briefly and as they were putting their coats on I said "By any chance did any of you lose a pair of mitts on Wednesday night?" and...another coincidence...one of them said "I did!". I reached into my bag, pulled out a pair of mitts and said "Are these them?" They were, and she was so happy to get them back, she insisted on buying me a glass of wine! Now...why did I have the mitts in my bag? At the last minute as we were leaving the house that afternoon I'd thought...I should take them with me in case I was to run into the person who lost them. It made absolutely no sense at the time but now it does!

Where Did The Summer Go?

Where did the Summer go? That may seem like an odd question now that we’re well into Autumn, but it’s been awhile (too long according to blogging experts) since our last post so we’ve got some ground to make up.

One of our favorite places to play in the Summer is at Barbara Hall Park as part of the Church Wellesley BIA’s Music In The Park summer music series. Music, Summer, performing outdoors...it doesn’t get any better. We’ve made many musical friends in The Village, in the years we've been part of the series. Many of our own fans also join us for a relaxing interlude in their day, in the oasis under the trees with the bustle of Church St. just behind. Our three shows mostly featured our original music in addition to requested favorites like 'Blowin’ In The Wind' and 'One Tin Soldier'. Our only regret was not being able to perform at the ‘No Hate In The Village’ event as we had a prior booking. (Photo: P. Chan)There’s nothing like a road trip to the country to remind you of how beautiful Summers are in Ontario. At the end of July, we drove up to Buckhorn to perform at their Community Care’s annual fundraiser, for a second year. The minute you leave the 401 and enter Kawartha lake country, everything slows down and gets greener and hillier! This year’s show was a tribute to the music of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, two of our favourite songwriters. Shelley Coppersmith joined us on violin and mandolin and I brought up my ‘vintage’ M1 to add keys on several tunes. There were many magical pin-drop moments during the evening as the crowd listened intently. Sue’s 'My Back Pages' and 'Famous Blue Raincoat' and my recent song crushes 'Just Like a Woman' and 'Amen' come to mind as highlights. And of course, Shelley's many showstopper solos. We ended the night appropriately with Cohen's 'Closing Time', which has way more lyrics than I ever thought! (Photo: Jodie)In September, we helped Miles Nadal JCC launch the 2019/2020 season of their Adult Daytime Culture and Education program with our new 'Legendary Ladies of Folk' show. Featuring the work of Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Buffy Sainte-Marie, the show sold out three weeks in advance! When we'd agreed to the theme of the show, we only knew about six of their songs and needed an additional twenty, so the pressure was on. It was the good kind though, that makes one stronger and builds calluses :) The biggest challenge was deciding which songs to pick given the vast catalogues of the three. We stuck mostly to 'the hits' and response from the audience was very positive. The liveliest responses went to 'Circle Game', 'Indian Cowboy In The Rodeo', and 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' with its Na Na Na along. (Photo: P. Chan)We couldn’t talk about the Summer highlights without mentioning our two monthly residencies. Our 60’s Folk Revival Sing a Long at the Free Times (third Wednesday of the month!) continues to be such a wonderful, uplifting gig. After every show, it always feels like 'the best show ever’ thanks to the enthusiastic and engaged audiences. Stay tuned for news on plans for 2020. (Photo: P. Chan)The 120 Diner has quickly grown into a real favorite place (last Thursday of the month!). We can really stretch out musically there and alternate show themes each month. In addition to our folk themed shows...'Music of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen' with Shelley in July, 'The Greatest Hits of Peter, Paul and Mary' with the wonderful Henry Lees and Tony Laviola in September, and 'The Legendary Ladies of Folk' this month...we also presented an evening of 'Sue and Dwight Original Music' in August. A VERY HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Reflecting on the wonderful Canada Day we had and thinking how lucky we are to have a job that allows us to experience so many fun things and meet so many amazing people.

For much of the past decade (Where has the time gone?) we have been honoured to be invited to perform at St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association celebration at St. James Park.

The picnic started at noon with a children's choir of sheer adorableness singing Oh Canada. Stuff like that always makes me choke up but also gave me a chuckle when I overheard one of the little ones comment to another as they walked off the stage "That went really well."

They were followed by speeches from various politicians (federal, provincial, and municipal). This area of the city is fortunate to have some really good ones representing it. The choir and speeches had been allotted an hour on the program but barely used half of that time. We were scheduled to go on at 1pm so it looked like we might start earlier. Then, while setting up we encountered some glitches with the soundboard, which luckily were resolved minutes before our scheduled start time, so it's great we had that extra time. Luck was on our side as we didn't have much extra time to spare before travelling to our next show. There were lots of familiar faces in the audience, which made it a very special time for us. Our friend Phyllis Chan captured this moment on stage for us.

What a wonderful place and the hospitality of the organizers and volunteers is so generous. They had prepared a lovely meal for us after the show that included, what we all agreed, was the best Portuguese chicken we've ever had. We had some really awesome experiences there, like requests for two of our original songs from people who got to know us from our last show at the hall. Because we perform a lot of covers in the various shows we do, we are used to people asking for those familiar songs...but when they ask for our original songs, we are over the moon thrilled. Here's a post show photo with Bryan, one of the wonderful volunteers. Two very different locations...one city, one more rural...great people at both. A Fine Night At The Diner With Wendell

The second edition of our monthly residency at the 120 Diner was an extra special one as we were joined by Wendell Ferguson on guitar.
We first met Wendell when we were just starting out on the music scene and dreamed of sharing a stage with him someday. That happened when we enlisted him to play on our last CD 'For A Moment' and he joined us at our release party. Wendell is an absolutely amazing guitar player and incredibly inventive. He’s also a genuinely nice guy and has been known to tell the odd joke or two. We couldn’t wait for the next opportunity to play with him.

That became the March 28 Diner show where we focused on original material for most of the night. Wendell’s guitar added new dimensions to Sue and Dwight standards like ‘Happy Little Children', 'Last Village Waltz', 'Little Child Big World' and 'For A Moment'. It also allowed Dwight to shift to piano for more songs than usual and the combination created a different live sound for us.

Of course we couldn’t help but sneak in a few covers. These included 'One Tin Soldier', which has long been a staple of our sets and a newer favourite 'Famous Blue Raincoat'. Sue’s vocal floated across Wendell and Dwight’s guitar and piano interplay.

A big thanks to the folks who attended, Mandy and Todd for such a great room, Ori for booking us, and of course to Wendell.
The April edition of our Diner residency will feature a Cohen/Dylan tribute with special guest Shelley Coppersmith accompanying on violin and mandolin. Mark the date, April 25, and hope to see you there!

Another Wonderful Winterfolk Weekend

Our first day at Winterfolk was so much fun. It started at 3pm with the Accordion Summit upstairs at The Black Swan...three accordions (or "boxes of fun" as Howard D. dubbed them) on one stage!

Next up for us at 5pm, at the Dora Keogh, was Lynn Harrison's 'The Bridge At Winterfolk' where the theme was 'Life Stories'. The vibe was wonderful and I thoroughly enjoyed every performer on the roster and Lynn’s lovely ritual of placing stones in a bowl to honour lost loved ones was so moving. I teared up when one was placed for Herb Dale who just passed recently. In the days and even moments leading up to it, we changed our minds so many times in deciding which of our songs to play and at the last moment decided on 'A Good Life' and 'Tommy Douglas'. The audience was attentively quiet on the first and attentively boisterous on the second, doing a fabulous job shouting out "Tommy Douglas" each time it came up in the song!

Then it was on to The Black Swan for our feature set at 8pm. Again, the audience was great. One gentleman purchased two of our CDs from the merch table then came over and told us he was moved by our music and stories and said "You're changing people's lives one person at a time with your music." OMG what an amazing compliment...totally made my day. Check out this photo. Today we were honoured to share the stage with two artists who are writing really good ones, Seb Agnello and Jon Brooks. The only bad part about it was that the set seemed to go by too quickly. I wanted to hear more.

Our final show of the festival was an intimate one of Sue and Dwight original music at the Mambo Lounge. Henry Lees, our friend and cohort in the Peter, Paul and Mary show we do, was in the audience and for our last song we invited him to join us in 'If I Had A Hammer'. It was all very spontaneous...we hadn't cleared it with him in advance and he didn't even know what song we were going to do until we announced it to the audience...but like a true pro and great sport, he rose to the occasion. It was lovely to have the three-part harmonies.

A Special Diner Evening

Steamships, raincoats, doorways, subways, prairies, Africa, mornings, lives, children, heath care, fortunes, neighbours...

Though a somewhat disparate list, these did constitute the theme of our musical return to Toronto’s 120 Diner on Friday night. The show was our last Sue and Dwight ‘original music’ show of 2018 and we were so pleased to perform it at the ‘Diner and with Kevin Quain joining us on piano and guitar. We were also pleased to see a full house of friendly faces in the audience.

We wanted the show to be musically special so we selected songs from across our catalogue. 'Anson Northrup' from our first CD sailed for the first time live in a few years. 'Happy Little Children' made it's Diner debut. Newer songs included 'A Good Life', 'When They Came For The Others', and 'A Good Morning'. We even played a new/old song, 'Sister Doorway', written in 1995. Our setlist also included these covers that we know are audience favourites 'Famous Blue Raincoat', 'One Tin Soldier' and 'There But For Fortune'.

It was a wonderful musical night and way to cap 2018. Next stop 2019!

Join Us At The 120 Diner!

We've been spending a lot of time developing our Folk Revival shows over the past year and as a result our original music has been on the back burner. To remedy that, we have a show booked at the 120 Diner and are really looking forward to having Kevin Quain join us on piano and bass.

Greatest Hits of Peter, Paul and Mary

Last year, after we developed a Leonard Cohen / Bob Dylan tribute for the Miles Nadal JCC Culture, Arts & Ideas Thursdays program. This year, the organizer asked if we would be interested in doing a Peter, Paul and Mary Greatest Hits show, and if we could add another male voice. YES! And we are fortunate that Toronto singer, Henry Lees was interested in joining us.

The 100 seat room was sold out and the room felt electric. I forgot, at first, to mention that in the folk music tradition, the audience was welcome to sing along if they wanted. Turns out an invitation wasn't necessary as people happily joined in right from the start.

After the show, we had several really nice interactions with people who came up to speak with us. One gentleman gave me the ultimate compliment "You really channeled Mary Travers." During the show, my eyes kept being drawn to a couple sitting towards the back of the room. They looked familiar but I couldn't place from where, until after the show when I heard their accents and knew immediately they were a couple from Tazmania who'd stumbled upon one of our 60's Folk Revival show posters on a signpost a few years ago and came out to a show at the Free Times Cafe. That night they signed up on our mailing list and have been following us online. So they knew about this show and were happy it was happening during their visit back to Toronto. Music really does bring the world together! Another couple, who are friends with Peter Yarrow and Noel Stookey weren't able to get tickets, so they sat outside the door and listened! During the last half hour of the show, a few people had to leave so they were able to take their seats. One gentleman, who I thought looked familiar, reminded me that a few Summers ago he and his wife sat for an hour watching Dwight and I as we busked on a street corner as part of the Cabbagetown Pop Up Street Music program. His voice faltered for a moment as he told me his wife passed away earlier this year and it's been very difficult for him. He said the music today really cheered him up. I was so glad to hear that.

The time flew and we were able to fit in almost all 20 songs we'd planned to do, except one. Luckily, the organizer asked us if we would do an encore so we were able to play it after all. We learned so many new songs and/or arrangements for this show, which was a lot of work but tons of fun. We plan to do more shows. In fact we've already got some scheduled!

End Of Summer Already?

Maybe not technically, because according to the calendar it doesn't officially end until September 22nd, but I think most of us feel the Labour Day weekend signals the end of Summer. It's been a good one...a really warm one here in southern Ontario...and we took a little more time off than usual to enjoy it. But we also played some fun shows during that time as well.

In July we headed up to the beautiful Kawartha region for some shows in the area. It started with a lovely afternoon show at a long term care residence in Peterborough on Friday. They were such an enthusiastic bunch. Even some who were unexpectedly so. I watched in amazement as one woman, who I'd noted while mingling and passing out show programs appeared totally unresponsive to her surroundings, began singing along during the show, even smiling and clapping. Another gentleman who seemed quiet during the show heartily thanked us afterwards "for keeping this music that means so much to us, alive."

The next show, the weekend's main event, was a dinner and music fundraiser for Peterborough/Buckhorn Community Care. The organizers did a great job promoting the sold-out event and came up with the 'Blowin' In The Wind' title for it. I figured it would be a good folk night when I noticed a Pete Seeger doppelganger in one of the tables up front!

It was a beautiful day filled with music, food, artisans, and community spirit.

Back in Toronto for August, in addition to one of our own scheduled performances, we were happy to fill in for a last minute cancellation one afternoon for the Music In The Park Series at Barbara Hall Park. It's great to perform outside in the Summer!

We had a packed house for the August 'Where Have All The Folk Songs Gone' show, where we introduced a couple of new songs. You can read all about that evening here: Hot August Night!

We have some cool shows coming up in September. Check out the details here: Upcoming Shows

Mid Summer 2018 Update

We've been having a great Summer so far and we're only halfway through it!

With two showers, lots of water, and popsicles from a sweet family in St. James Park who insisted they had extras that would melt and go to waste if we didn't take them, we celebrated a hot and sweaty (+34C and muggy) Canada Day with two shows. The first was the annual St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Canada Day party. We always make sure to include the song 'This Land' by The Travellers to continue the tradition of our friend and founding member of the group, Sid Dolgay, who invited us to sing it with him at this celebration for years before he passed away in 2015. The second show of the day was at Barbara Hall Park where we were invited to kick off the Church and Wellesley BIA Music In The Park Series. It was a wonderful day and the fact that the performances were both outdoors made it extra special. After all, that's what Summer is all about! Bob On!

According to Webster, the term 'bob on' means 'a good thing' or 'congratulations'. In the music world that would include performing at a Bob Dylan tribute. Well it was bob on for us at Hugh’s Room Live last night as we were part of a great musical line-up performing in honour of his 77th birthday.

Like many tribute shows, one of the highlights is the other musicians you get to meet and play with, many for the first time. It doesn’t get much better than sharing a bill with Paul James, Sultans of String with Anwar Khurshid, Michelle Rumball, Kyp Harness, Melanie Peterson, and Magoo. Round that off with host, musicologist Rob Bowman and you’ve got quite a night!

Then there are the road stories. Paul James has actually played and hung out with Bob Dylan. Rob Bowman is doing liner notes, by personal request of Bob, for an upcoming Dylan retrospective. Serious Dylan stuff!

And there was the music itself. We played ‘Girl from the North Country’ and ‘The Times they are a Changin’, a last minute sub for ‘My Back Pages’ that we thought would be easier for the crowd to sing to. Sing they did and listened as well; you could hear a pin drop in the sold-out room during ‘North Country. They were also apparently watching and after the show one fellow who noticed my change of harmonicas inquired about the keys.

I also acquired a new favorite Dylan song, ‘Buckets of Rain’ that Paul James played. It’s built around an old delta blues riff that Dylan’s honest lyrics made his own. In an evening of musical gems, the ‘Sultan’s sitar driven versions of 'Blowin’ in the Wind' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man' may have been the most unconventional covers of the night and great ones at that!

The finales at tributes are always fun as everyone hits the stage. Paul had rallied us around a rollicking version of ‘Rainy Day Women’. Then the audience asked for more, which led to a quick on stage consultation…”How about I Shall Be Released?”, “Who knows the words to Like A Rolling Stone?” etc., which pianist Michael Theodore concluded with the intro bars of ‘Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door’. The perfect choice! Magoo took the lead on it and the night had its fitting zenith.

A special thanks to Derek Andrews for organizing such a great night and to all the Dylan fans who attended. And thank to Bryan S., an audience member for sending us this photo from the evening.

Winterfolk 2018

One of the greatest things about the mid-Winter Winterfolk Festival in Toronto is the sense of community it creates among the musicians and the public, volunteers, and among the musicians themselves.

Our first show was on the Friday night at the Dora Keogh. In fact the venues everywhere we went throughout the weekend were packed with enthusiastic music lovers and from what we experienced, really good listening audiences.

Several music fans told me they love the format of the festival where they can easily get to many diverse performances within a short period of time, seeing their old favourites and discovering new ones. And one woman gushed about how she loved the accessibility to "all you famous musicians”. That was sweet.

It was a great festival!

Our Utopian Mini Tour!

For some Toronto based musicians, gigs north of Bloor St. can seem like a major jaunt. So just imagine the anticipation of traveling even further north for a full weekend of northern musical exposure.

Our first stop was the appropriately named hamlet of Utopia. The hamlet and it's namesake hall pop out of the scenic fields along 6th Line just 15 minutes west of Barrie. Utopia Hall was built as a community centre back in 1956 and is now privately owned and run by a determined group of volunteers. A pillar of their program is the annual eight show Concert Series, which includes a delicious home cooked meal.

We were so pleased to be a part of series and were warmly greeted by the volunteers when we arrived to set up. It was a good sign to learn that organizer Susan Antler was off buying more food as tickets sales grew to near capacity!

Our set was a journey through our music catalogue touching down in Africa with 'Chinteche', 'When The Rains Don’t Come', and 'Little Child Big World', the prairies with 'Prairie Girl' and 'Uncle Joe', and onto current issues with 'Marching' (by request from an audience member) and 'When They Came For The Others'. In addition to covering some of our favourite songwriters like Phil Ochs ('In The Heat of the Summer') and Leonard Cohen ('So Long Marianne', 'Hallelujah'), we also played a Folk Revival mini set with the assistance of the hall's chef and bassist Steve Lang. The audience was enthusiastic and sang along all night. As we drove off on the dark starlit road, we knew it was a night that we’ll remember for a long time. Thanks to Bryan Kennedy for snapping this photo...

Next stop was Port Carling and the Company of Good Cheer Coffeehouse, a series run by Beverlie and 'Po Cholly' Robertson, who started the series a decade ago to bring music and arts to the area.

Beverlie was a member of the seminal 1960’s folk trio, the Chanteclairs. Along with her delta blues playing husband Charlie, the couple have nurtured a vibrant musical scene amongst all the local natural beauty.

Muskoka Place Gallery is an intimate venue nestled amongst the pine trees and it filled up quickly. The audience was warm and welcoming and gave a nice vocal lift to originals 'Tommy Douglas', 'A Good Morning ', and 'One Song' which we love doing as a couplet with Pete Seeger’s 'If I Had A Hammer.' Sue’s 'For A Moment' was a fitting finale to a wonderful show and musical weekend. Thanks Beverlie, for these photos...
Even after the show, the music continued. Staying with our hosts Beverlie and Charlie, we had the thrill of playing songs and swapping stories around their kitchen table until the wee hours. Now that’s folk music!

Driving back to Toronto (and south of Bloor!), we had plenty of time to reflect on the shows and on how live music is certainly alive, well, and prospering in so many wonderful places.

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? Come Party Like It's 1965!

Last year our New Year's Eve show at the Free Times Café was so much fun, we have to do it again this year. Cohen, Dylan, and Ochs

We had a wonderful time last night presenting the songs of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Phil Ochs to a great audience at the 120 Diner.

We kicked off the evening with one of our originals, 'One Song' (listen here), that talks about how a song itself can't change the world but people singing it can. Whether that's by the message in the song or by the feeling that the song evokes. Seemed appropriate on this kind of tribute night.

Following that, we round-robined the songs by artist alphabetically. First up was Cohen's 'So Long Marianne' and coincidentally, it turns out there were two Marianne's in the audience. Dwight moved between the guitar and piano throughout the evening. I loved singing 'Famous Blue Raincoat' to a gentle piano accompaniment, and Dwight's fearless rendition of 'Like A Rolling Stone' with Dylan phrasing and a driving guitar seemed to be a crowd favourite.

Of course there were many more great songs, by all three artists to choose from, than we had time for in the show. When making our set list we were divided on whether to include 'Mr. Tambourine Man' or 'Blowin In The Wind' so we took an audience vote. It was pretty close but in the end, 'Blowin In The Wind' emerged victorious.

We snuck in one more of our original songs at the start of the second set...a stripped down version of 'World Made By Hand'. An audience member remarked after the show that she was glad to hear a few of our originals included in the evening and bought the CD with that song on it.

As one of his most widely covered songs, there are so many great versions of Lenard Cohen's 'Suzanne' out there. In selecting which one to perform, we'd narrowed it down to three that we liked best...Cohen's sparse and moody version, Judy Collin's trademark flowing version, and Nina Simone's animated eclectic version. Rather than choosing one, we went with all three...a verse and chorus of each!

In researching the songs we'd come across some great little tidbits that we shared with the audience in brief introductions. I especially like the ones that are quotes from the songwriters themselves as they usually provide some pretty interesting insights.

Although I've heard some critics argue that Cohen's 'Hallelujah' should be retired, I don't agree. It's a beautiful song that people like to hear and sing along to. We ended the evening with it and it was lovely hearing the audience voices join us on the chorus.

After the show, one audience member told me she'd never heard of Phil Ochs before and couldn't wait to look him up and hear more of his music. He is definitely a songwriter who should be even better known than he is.

It was a really fun evening and I think we will look at doing another one of these tribute shows again in the future.

SET ONE: ONE SONG / SO LONG MARIANNE / MY BACK PAGES / THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE / BIRD ON THE WIRE / MIGHTY QUINN / WHEN I'M GONE / FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT / BLOWIN' IN THE WIND / DRAFT DODGER RAG / LIKE A ROLLING STONE

SET TWO: WORLD MADE BY HAND / SUZANNE / I AIN'T MARCHING / GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY / FIRST WE TAKE MANHATTAN / HEAT OF THE SUMMER / CHANGES / I SHALL BE RELEASED / HALLELUJAH

Something New! The Poet’s Series

What do Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Phil Ochs most have in common? Many would say that it’s their foundation as songwriters in poetry and lyrics. For all three, the words seem to matter the most whether the song is about protest, love, or politics.

The Spirit Of Adventure

Over the last few months we’ve been involved in something pretty special that culminated last week in the live recording of a new album by Toronto singer songwriter, Arlene Bishop.

Arlene is an amazing and creative songwriter so it’s no surprise that her latest CD would be produced in a less than conventional way. 'Together Tonight' was just recorded live at Toronto’s Social Capital Theatre in 3 shows with a 4 piece band and a choir…aka the Vorchestra… composed of over 25 individuals from the Canadian music scene assembled to provide sweet back-up vocals for some incredible new songs.

We were thrilled to be part of the Vorchestra, defined by Arlene as a “totally made up word describing a lovable collection of kick-ass people singing together to blow off our common existential angst”. It was one of those once in a lifetime musical experiences. Some hard work was required to learn the eight songs. But rehearsals seem effortless when you’re surrounded by voices like those of Blair Packham, Adam Faux, Meryn Cadell, David Sereda, Bev Kreller, Howard Druckman to name just a few. Conductrix John Copping kept the gang in line with whimsy and mirth.

One word that kept coming up throughout the rehearsals, in the months prior and during the shows themselves, by both participants and audience was “magic”.

Music is a great tool in bringing people together and through this project we have strengthened existing relationships and forged new ones.

We’re already looking forward to the next phases of the project...the CD Launch...the Documentary Launch.........maybe even a world tour??? ;) But first, Producer James Paul has the task of combing through all the takes to find the best ones for the final mixes. We’ll let you know when the release date is set and you can find out more about the whole project at www.arlenebishop.com. A big thank you to Arlene for inviting us to be a part of the Vorchestra!

Guinness World Record Longest Concert
We just got back from Stouffville where we were part of Epidemic Music Group’s official attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Longest Concert By Multiple Artists. The 16 day, 24hr a day marathon at the Earl of Whitchurch pub started on March 17 and will also raise funds for 16 charities. We were very happy to be part of such a proud Canadian moment in Canada’s 150th year! Pamela Kohly took these photos during one of our sets:This was a musical experience like no other. For starters, we did 2 shows in about 10 hours including a perky 5am early bird set that required a perkier 2:30am wake-up call. The spirit of the musicians was amazing and there will be over 400 performances over the 16 days. We met and heard Matt Gunn, Melanie Hebert, and The Albert Street 4 perform among others for the first time. Everyone was pulling together!

There were also a lot of rules as this was an official Guinness World Record Event. Musicians had to stick exactly to their set list as songs couldn’t be repeated within a 4 hour period. Only 30 seconds were allowed between songs...and there was a countdown clock! And after a 55 minute set, there was a maximum of 5 minutes changeover before the next artist. There also had to be at least 10 paying customers in the audience at all times. That apparently has not been a problem as the Stouffville community has really gotten behind the event and there were about 25 people at our 5AM show! It was a real musician’s bootcamp and a very enjoyable one at that. Check out the rules photo below.
What really blew us away was the army of volunteers and the audience. There were just so many tasks involved for the volunteers to keep everything running smoothly and to ensure the rules were followed. Some were pulling 24 hour shifts. And what can you say about music lovers who show up at midnight and don’t leave until 6am, night after night. Kevin Ker and his team at Epidemic have done an amazing job at this run for the World Record!

Of note, the charities involved include Sick Kids, Markham Stouffville Hospital, Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research,360 Kids, North Toronto Cat Rescue, Artscan Circle, Songs 4 Steffi, Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, The Family Navigation Project and more. Over $25,000 has been raised in the first week.

Nothing Finer Than The 120 Diner!

We made a return visit to one of our favourite clubs last week, the 120 Diner. It’s a terrific musician and audience friendly venue. We played once again assisted by Kevin Quain on bass & piano, which really allows us to stretch out musically, play all the hits and deep cuts as they say. We dusted off 'Red River' to start off a great night and also debuted Sue’s new song 'Not An Activist?'. Stay tuned for the track and video which we start to work on next week. Thanks to Todd, Ori and the rest of the gang at 120 Diner for creating such a great space for music!

A Warm Winterfolk 2017

With the thermometer hitting 10C, it was a warm Winterfolk inside and out on the Family Day weekend! We were once again really pleased to be part of this Toronto institution and managed to sneak in 3 nice shows in between all the catching up with fellow folkies.

A real highlight for us was our Saturday workshop celebrating 150 Years of Canadian Folk Music. Joined by Kim Doolittle and Tom Leighton & Conrad Kipping, we traveled musically through 150 years and from coast to coast. In between opener ‘Something to Sing About’ and closer the McGarrigles ‘Long Driver’s Waltz’, there were highlights a plenty including ‘Nova Scotia Farewell’, Stompin’ Tom’s ‘Up Canada Way’ and ’Un Canadian Errant. It was a ‘real workshop’ as Tom noted, and we were so happy to be able play with such a talented group!

We finished off the festival with a full ‘Sue & Dwight’ set on Sunday night at Terri-O’s. It was nice to play for such an appreciative crowd which included Tom Leighton and also Wendell Ferguson who closed the night with his usual hilarity. Thank you to Brian Gladstone and the Winterfolk team!

2016 In Review

2016 was a fun-filled musical year for us. Here's a quick recap...

The biggest news was that we released our third CD, For A Moment. We had the good fortune to record at Revolution Recording studio and to work with two different producers on the project. Kevin Quain, who co-produced our first two CDs, and Mike Elmer who joined us for the first time. They were both wonderful to work with and we were thrilled with the outcome. Our CD Launch Party in June at the Tranzac Club’s main hall was a great, SRO night as we transformed the big room into an intimate coffeehouse. We were joined on stage by many of the fab musicians who played on the CD...Wendell Ferguson on guitar, Dave Lang on double bass, Adam Warner on drums, and Kevin Quain on piano and electric bass. The CD has been distributed to radio stations within Canada and has had great support from DJ's here.

'Sue and Dwight' forged some new ground this year, in addition to our monthly Tranzac Club Sunday matinee with Dave Lang on bass and our 10th year performing at Winterfolk. New to us venues included The Station Coffee House in Brantford, where on a warm Autumn day we played outdoors beside the tracks. A well timed train rumbled by midway through the performance of 'Last Village Waltz', which has lyrics that reference the railway. We enjoyed playing outdoors so much that we were very pleased to be part of the new 'Music In The Park' series at Barbara Hall Park in the Village. We also were thrilled to perform at the 120 Diner on Church Street for the first time, where Kevin Quain joined us on piano and bass. And we must mention the wonderful experience we had being part of Michael Wrycraft's James Taylor Tribute show at Hugh's Room last January...what a way to kick off the year!

As part of the group 'Where Have All The Folk Songs Gone' we had some major highlights as well. We performed our monthly show at the Free Times right through the Summer this year to mostly full houses and capped off the year with a special New Years Eve show. The club was jam packed and owner, Judy Perly tells us she had to turn away 100 people who called in for reservations. Yikes! The Folk Revival also took us to Hamilton’s Artbar, Niagara on the Lake, and some special private and festival shows. Hard to believe, but we just wrapped up 4 years of doing this show together.

An entirely new and very fulfilling venture for us in 2016 was a collaboration with SMILE Theatre. SMILE brings small theatrical productions to senior's residences and other venues across Canada, where people may not be able to get out to attend live productions. We created a special two person edition of 'Where Have All the Folk Songs Gone' for SMILE and have performed for a number of appreciative audiences.

We are looking forward to 2017 and all the exciting new adventures ahead!

Diner Debut!

It featured a strict ‘listening’ room policy, and a set / suggested cover charge for the performers...not necessarily a recipe for success in TO’s sometimes fickle music scene. Well, the recipe is proving tasty to music fans and the venue has expanded it’s reach to roots and folk music. Lucky for us!

We made our 120 Diner debut to a full and wonderful crowd last Friday night. We were delighted to perform with our long time musical conspirator Kevin Quain. His piano and bass chops allowed us to cover some tunes that haven’t seen the stage in quite some time, including Sue’s ‘Almost Missed the Beauty’ and ’Too Little Too Late’ featuring the quirky bass lines that really make those songs. Dwight debuted his new tremolo pedal, which added to the moodiness of ‘Darlings of the Open Stage’ and ‘So Beautiful’. And, “World Made By Hand” made it's debut in a stripped down version with Dwight on piano.

The audience was terrific and created a great vibe. And yes the room is still a listening room! Thank you to Todd, Maureen and Ori for welcoming us to this musical gem.

Hey, we’re be back at the 120 Diner in 2017, Friday, February 24th 6-8pm. Please join us!

(For) A Moment In Winnipeg
Last week we popped into Winnipeg with our new CD and played a couple of shows at a sweet new venue, Strong Badger Coffeehouse, that just opened on Sargent Ave. Great beverages and fresh baked goodies. It was fun playing in our hometown.

Not wanting to fly with our guitars, having heard the horror stories, we rented some beauties from Long and McQuade. Wondering who Woodrow Lloyd is? We all should, because we have him to thank for our healthcare system here in Canada and he hailed from Saskatchewan. 'For A Moment' CD Launch Party

We're still recovering, in the best way, from last week's big party to celebrate our recently released CD, 'For A Moment'! On Saturday, June 18th, the Main Hall at the Tranzac Club was transformed into an intimate bistro for the packed house. All the butterflies that accompany the planning and execution of a show like this quickly disappeared as we opened the doors and the enthusiastic (and incredibly punctual) crowd took their seats. The buzz in the room was electric!

It was a very hot day in Toronto (+30C)...seems to be a trend for us as our second CD was launched on an equally hot day in 2009...but the aircon was working it's magic, and the room was very comfortable.

We were joined on-stage by an incredible band of musicians who played on the CD; co-producer Kevin Quain pulling double duty on piano and electric bass, Wendell Ferguson on guitar, Adam Warner on drums and washboard, Dave Lang on stand up bass, and co-producer Mike Elmer on guitar and percussion. Lockchi did a great job, behind the soundboard, pulling us all together! The first set started with a dedication of ’Little Child Big World’ to a young audience member celebrating her birthday that night, before launching in to the new CD with a trio (Sue, Dwight, and Dave) version of ‘Long Road’.

Next up was the full band debut of the Stones Inspired ‘Sadness in Your Eyes’, a song that had Sue a little worried because it's a departure from the more acoustic 'Sue and Dwight' sound. Based on the audience response, her concerns are unfounded :) This was followed by ‘Big Sky’ and ‘I Wonder’. At the midway point of the set we trimmed down to Kevin on piano, Dave on double bass and us on accordion and guitar to reproduce ‘Sweet Ida’, ‘Suddenly Invisible’ and ‘For A Moment’. The full band reassembled to give ‘Tommy Douglas’ (complete with Dwight on banjo!), ‘Too Little Too Late’ and finally ’World Made By Hand’ the full treatment. We were overwhelmed by the crowd’s enthusiastic response.

We were so fortunate to have good friends volunteer to help us out...setting up tables, prepping and presiding over the food, working the door, seating guests, and selling merch. We couldn't have pulled off the evening without them. As it happens, our volunteers are also amazing singer songwriters and so in the second set, after playing a stripped down one guitar version of 'Darlings Of the Open Stage', we were thrilled to present Shawna Caspi, Sean Peever, Kim Cole, and Michelle Rumball who each performed a song of theirs for the audience. All were amazing! In the home stretch, Kevin joined us on piano for an album version of ‘Last Village Waltz’ and the full band joined in a singalong of ‘One Song’. The show closed with ‘Get Together’ and the whole cast joining in on ‘I Shall Be Released’.Thanks so much to everyone who shared this special event with us!

Playin’ With Pete at Panter’s

Some of the very best places to play in Toronto are the lesser known gems scattered throughout the City. We played one of these on Saturday. Panter’s Pub is a monthly music night that takes place in the Upper Room at the old Church of the Holy Trinity tucked just behind the Eaton Centre.

The room was once the location of one of Toronto’s first girls’ schools and you play under a gothic arched ceiling surrounded by stained glass windows, beautiful! The music program is run by volunteers, the amazing Keith Nunn and Beth Baskin.

The event is semi private, for members of Holy Trinity and guests, and a nicer audience would be hard to find! Check it out to play or listen, you never know who may pop by!
http://www.holytrinitytoronto.org

The Bridge

Magical musical evenings are often hard to find. We were very fortunate to perform at one of these last week at the Tranzac Club. The Bridge is a monthly open mic, hosted by the Rev. Lynn Harrison who is also an amazing singer songwriter. http://www.lynoleum.com.

Each night has a unique theme. Participants are asked to share a song or spoken word selection that speaks to it. Lynn links it all together with readings from a variety of sources and a clever selection of songs. Lynn is a Unitarian minister, so what unfolds is a warm evening of sincere humanitarian spirituality.

This night the theme was Growth so we sang 'Who' from our 'Little Child Big World' CD. A Very Wintery Winterfolk 2016!

♫♪ ♫♪•*¨*•.¸Another great Winterfolk experience. Between the five shows we were part of, and watching other great performers, we spent most of the weekend on Danforth Ave. We played 2 'Sue and Dwight' shows highlighted by a great late Sunday slot with Dave Lang on bass. We were fortunate to be a part of a great 'Phil Ochs' 75th Birthday Tribute hosted by Seb Agnello, a special edition of Lynn Harrison's 'The Bridge", and a live stream show hosted by songstress Nicole Coward. New CD Update – It Ain’t Over ‘Til the Banjo Plays

We’ve all heard the old saying ‘It ain’t over until the fat lady sings’. In folk music, the equivalent phrase might be ‘It ain’t over ‘til the banjo plays’. Here’s a photo of Dwight laying down the last track for our new CD at Hannah Road studio. It’s a banjo part on the song ‘Tommy Douglas’ which is about all the heroes who made Medicare a reality in Canada. We’re heading back to Revolution Recording to mix the CD next week!

Recording the New CD!

Our new CD, with the working title ‘For A Moment’, got off to a flying start at Revolution Recording this month. We spent 7 solid spectacular days laying down bed tracks, vocals, you name it, in this fabulous place with their great staff. We also had the ‘Sue and Dwight’ musical family with Kevin Quain and Mike Elmer producing different songs. Here are just some of the highlights. An early 2016 release is planned.

Day 1: We meet Stephen Koszler and James Finnerty our engineers who we will be in lock step with for the next 7 days. Mike gets the CD off to a great start. We’re in the big room, Studio A, and Adam Warner who played drums on our last CD and fellow Manitoban and bass wiz Jesse Dietschi nail some great rhythms on 5 tracks that will expand our sound. Jesse plays a grand old German bass on my Stompin’ Tom song and Beethoven rolls over again! But questions abound… can we do it all in 7 days, will I get permission for lyrics on World Made By Hand, how can this studio be so great??
Later on Day 1: Rehearsal night with Swamperella. I learned to play accordion listening to Swamperella CDs and our song Uncle Joe channels their great sound. I asked them to play on the song and when they said ‘yes’ it was quite a rush. It was a bit of a magical evening as we exchanged musical ideas in the round in an old Parkdale coach house on a beautiful Summer’s night. They’ll join us in the studio on Day 7.

Day 2: We’re greeted again cheerily at the door by Amanda, which we enjoyed and appreciated for the entire run. It’s a day of guitars, and vocals in cozy Studio C as we build on Jesse and Adam’s tracks. There’s a country song, Stones-like song, a quirky song, and gospel style song. We break for lunch at 3pm… hey man we’re in the studio…and come back to get vocals down on 4 songs before quitting time. Sue and I can see each other though the gobos which really helps the singing and allows me to observe that Sue got a lamp in her booth…

Day 3: We start a new batch of 5 songs with Kevin Quain at the board and Dave Lang in on double bass. Dave and I get the beds down on these our more acoustic tunes. We make preparations to have the Nordheimer upright piano readied for its work out tomorrow. It sounds like the old piano in my parent’s basement. The CD is off to a flying start!

Day 4: A days of keys. Kevin is conscripted for piano duty on Sweet Ida, Suddenly Invisible and Too Little Too Late. After some accordion tracks, I add the piano to World Made By Hand and it’s on to vocals. Stephen is creating pencil mixes for us each day…the songs start to take their own shape. We have a pooped but incredibly happy ride home on the band bus (#510 Queen).

Day 5: We finish up the vocals on this batch of songs and Shelley Coopersmith joins us to add some violin (or is it a fiddle?) to Tommy Douglas and For A Moment. Mike comes in with some mixes of the 1st batch and there are smiles all around. Sadness in Your Eyes sounds like a Stones song. We lay down an inspired vocal to World Made By Hand and I cross my fingers that I hear from James Kunstler soon! We eat lunch at 4 o’clock because …hey man we’re the studio. Stephen and James are still going strong after another long day…how do they do it?

Day 6: Wendell Ferguson is in to lay down guitars and he’s doing it all…classical, Stones’, R&B. We’ve known Wendell for years and have been looking forward to this for a while. It’s a thrill! When we get home, there’s a very nice message from James Kunstler with a go ahead. I borrowed some lines from his book World Made By Hand on my song of the same name …the thrill meter just popped again!

Day 7: Not only the final day but an ambitious one back in Studio A, so we’re pumped. Mike Daley’s vocal quartet absolutely nails the gospel harmonies I was looking for on World Made By Hand. Mike’s joined by Jason Farrar, and Laurel Tubman and Karen Scovell of the Nathanial Dett Chorale. Karen’s voice is so powerful we have her stand back a couple of feet from the rest! I have to fully relinquish the producer’s chair to Mike because I keep tearing up as it comes to life. The hand claps and ‘hmmmms’ send it over the edge.

Swamperella arrives and we lock into Uncle Joe and also Music Stirs Her Soul. Connie and Rachel create a great rhythm. Peter and I create a double accordion attack to ‘Joe… absolute magic!

It’s 6pm and we still have 3 vocals to do which just ride on the adrenaline of the day. We bid a fond farewell to Stephen and James and hop into the band bus (still the #510 Queen) with Kevin for home as the sun disappears. Sue’s words from For A Moment ring in my head…”I know my work here is done’.
