The Story Behind The Song

It seems you make some of your best friends when you’re in your teens. Tuxedo Kicks takes you back to Dwight’s teenage years in Winnipeg when he and the boys would wander the streets of their Tuxedo neighbourhood looking for fun on the weekend. Things would start up in September once everyone was back at school with a new year ahead.

The hub of the activity was Hubech Park, a large park with lots of hidden spaces for teens to mingle out of sight in the evening. Inevitably, they’d hit the streets and wander looking for other groups. They never were looking for trouble just exploring the upcoming adolescence and teenage years. The friendships forged in the relatively short journey of going from boys to young men and can endure for decades.

Lyrics:

Verse 1
A bit in the city, a bit on its own
A bit of a sleepy, rich little town
The home of old money, in came the few
Crossing the tracks, home of the new

Chorus
Tuxedo kicks, we walked along
Shoulder to shoulder in the fall moon light
Tuxedo kicks, will I see you again
In Hubeck Park next Saturday night

Verse 2
Kids are just kids, so it was hard to have known
Why the rest of the city would always talk us down
Though we weren’t our parents, our lives yet to be lived
People would say “There go those Tuxedo kids”

Bridge
We were too innocent for our own good
Never really had to leave our neighbourhood
But when the boys from the base came around
We grew up fast and always stood our ground

Verse 3
So we kept to our rec rooms, never strayed far
Walked down Mountbatten and turned up on Bower
And back to the pumphouse along Cuthbertson
To the rink to see Alvis when the flooding was done

Verse 4
Kids with a cottage would be gone all summer
Then all back at school to check out the newcomers
Another year older, some things never changed
If a stink bomb is broken must be Ketchen again
