We need a shake-up before its too late
The Story Behind The Song 2025 Remix
Sue and Dwight's new Single raises the alarm that world events are wildly out of control and that we need a big shake-up before it’s too late.
“When I first wrote this song in a pandemic dazed 2020, I thought world conditions couldn’t possibly get any worse,” Sue explains. “Yet they have. I still believe there’s hope though, and it starts within all of us confronting the chaos and collectively finding the way forward. We’re not helpless and we need to act now”.
Emboldened authoritarians, environmental devastation, growing inequality, and senseless wars have all converged to take the world to an even more dangerous place in 2025. Self interest and complacency have turned us into bystanders and enablers to impending disaster.
To deal with this, the song channels unrest into rhythm, blending an urgent lyrical call out to act ‘before its too late’ with a pulsating ticking clock guitar rhythm. Imagine Billy Bragg and Pete Seeger meeting the Doors.
As Sue notes, “I wrote this not just as a song but as a wake-up call”.

How do we get out of this mess
When the whole damn world’s on fire?
Society crumbing from unrest, situation dire
We need to wake up before it’s too late
And it burns beyond repair
We need a shake-up before it’s too late
Or does anybody care?
How do we get out of this mess
When we’re fighting a losing battle?
Environment is under duress, situation fragile
We need to clean up before it’s too late
And we cannot breathe the air
We need a shake-up before it’s too late
Or does anybody care?
How do we get out of this mess
Where some peoples lives don’t matter?
With some treated worse than all the rest, situation sadder
We need to step up before it’s too late
And demand a world that’s fair
We need a shake-up before it’s too late
Or does anybody care?
Does anybody care? Is anybody there?
Does anybody know what to do?
How do we get out of this mess
When the whole damn world’s on fire?
Society crumbing from unrest, situation dire
We need to wake up before it’s too late
And it burns beyond repair
We need a shake-up before it’s too late
Or does anybody care?
We need to clean up before it’s too late
And we cannot breathe the air
We need to step up before it’s too late
And demand a world that’s fair
We need a shake-up before it’s too late
Or does anybody care?
How do we get out of this mess?
