The Story Behind the Song
posted by Dwight

Sunny Sunny Day actually has its origins back in the late 1980s.

We were at a family get together which made me nostalgic. I thought of those childhood days when I’d be with my grandparents at their houses in Winnipeg’s north end. There always seemed to be a big blue sky, sunshine and the houses on their 25 foot lots were always neat and extremely well kept. And my memories always seemed to be of the coming of summer. Everyone seemed to be carefree and happy.

I had a similar memory from when I was in high school. In the last few weeks of the school year, kids from all the local schools gravitated to Assiniboine Park and River. We’d sit on the lawn enjoy the sunshine just happy to be in a good place, not really thinking of what the future might hold.

It was when we were in Saskatoon that the song sprung to life. As the snow melted and May rolled into June, I saw that people were drawn to Meewasin Park along the banks of the Saskatchewan River. I wanted to capture these moments so I could pull them out on those rainy days.

After sitting on the shelf for over 20 years, the song got its rebirth during the pandemic and it always got a good response from our online crowd. When I was looking for a song to start off 2025, it seemed to be the one we might all need.

In production, the song got trimmed down from 3 verses to 2 and I dropped in a piano solo and which all seem to give the song focus and energy.  I then went back to my Beatles’ records because I thought one their music hall approaches would work. Good Day Sunshine maybe? Unlike the Beatles I did include an accordion part because as we all know, almost all songs need some accordion.

Our trusty bass player Tony Laviola and I laid down the tracks. Tony started with quite a reggae approach which morphed into the music hall style. We did keep in a lot of the reggae inspired licks though as they were just too good to cut. Tony always brings so much to each song, ideas that I would never think of, from his vast experience.

Welcome to a Sunny Sunny Day!

Lyrics:

Verse 1
At times we’ve all been there, feeling down and in despair           Looking for a better way                                                                 I know of a place that will put a smile on our faces and                        Make the whole thing seem worth while

Pre Chorus                                                                              There’ll be neat white houses and green lawns                                 People strolling singing songs, and the sun will always shine

Chorus                                                                                         We’ll go down to the river down to the river                                   We won’t ever have to shake or shiver                                       Come a long this way                                                                 And we’ll have a sunny, sunny day

Verse 2
Have you ever seen a day with sky so blue and grass so green       Trees reach up to greet the sky                                                    Sun so bright way up high, river so fresh as it ripples by and   Wanders merrily on its way

Pre Chorus 2
We’ll see people sitting on the lawn                                        Worship the heat now the winter’s gone                                     Hear the tinkle of the bicycle bell

Chorus

We’ll go down to the river, far and wide                                      We’re headed for the sunnyside                                                 Come a long this way                                                                 And we'll have a sunny, sunny day
